In fact, Akurra reminds me very much of my beloved Full Bore. The demo offers some recontextualising of what you have seen before although this aspect isn’t as pervasive as it is in, say, The Witness or one of my older favourites, Full Bore (Whole Hog Games, 2013). There is some gating which makes the ride smoother than The Witness but there are so many concepts on show here that it becomes a game of constant discovery. I know the modern puzzle game opts for implicit tutorials but the reason that Akurra ends up Witnessy is because you are free to journey wherever you wish, more or less, which means you keep wading into new, unfamiliar mechanics. ![]() Anyway, while much of Akurra is block pushing, the experience was so engrossing that it completely bulldozed over my irrational Sokoban-phobia: we ploughed through the whole demo without a break.Īkurra has no wordy tutorial which I assume isn’t just a quirk but a design choice. But not to worry as I’m receiving electro-shock therapy for this common condition. Nutshell: Open-world Sokoban-variant rife with secrets to discover, still in development.Īlthough I’ve come around to the idea that pushing blocks can be fun, I still seem to operate from a default position of “what, Sokoban again?” every time I fire up a blockpusher. Anyway joke’s on me because I had far too much fun with Akurra. That’s like saying “if you like Citizen Kane, you might enjoy this film.” Bwahahaha. Something tells me you’ll like it.”Ĭome on, you can’t namedrop The Witness carelessly like that in a tweet. It’s a bit of a cross between Sokoban, Legend of Zelda and The Witness – a freeroam puzzle game by. It’s up to you now to solve the puzzles and bit by bit reach the ultimate goal of your journey. In April, good Electron Dance friend Maurycy Zarzycki, who designed the short, free puzzle game Machine at the Heart of the World(Evidently Cube, 2018), tweeted this right at my face: “You should check the demo of Akurra if you haven’t yet heard about it. Now someone brave has to fix this broken world by retrieving the pieces of TetraGen. Only by using all of its powers the Will of Tetragon managed to imprison the dark creature but it was too late. After a while it had spawned the most bizarre creature intending to destroy the TetraGen and plunge the world of Tetragon into the chaos! Eventually, this creature had reached its goal and the TetraGen jewel was broken into the pieces. Since the dawn of time it had been a prosperous world with no place for anything evil in it… until out of nowhere a mysterious dark energy started to grow in Tetragon. ![]() These planes float around the sacred jewel – TetraGen. Somewhere in the parallel universe there is a world made of the plane realities. Using the power of TetraGen move the ground and the towers to guide the brave lumberjack Lucios through the scattered worlds and find his lost son! Your goal is to move planes with a spinning world gravity. ![]() Welcome to Tetragon – a vast mysterious universe of unique game mechanics, puzzles, magical mazes, and challenges! It’s a real challenge for those who enjoy the games in the vein of The Room, The Witness and The Talos Principle.
